Along with Frank Wootton, Robert Grant Smith, known to most as ‘R G’, is widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern aviation art. In a remarkable career spanning seven decades R G Smith achieved acclaim as both an aircraft engineer and designer, and an aviation artist. In his early years he was a leading member of the design team for the Douglas Aircraft Company (later to be McDonnell Douglas). His artwork started as a hobby but as his proficiency and popularity grew it became his main occupation.
