Mustang by Roy Cross

Book Tour
Previous  Up  Next

In aviation circles most will know Roy Cross as the artist who for many years created the striking art work for the Airfix range of plastic kits, the Mustang shown above being a typical example. However his talent is much broader than this, he has created many technical cut-away drawings and side profiles for both books and leading aviation magazines such as Aeroplane and Aviation Week. He is equally proficient at a fine art style and has been a regular exhibitor with The Guild of Aviation Artists. In addition Roy Cross is a world renowned marine artist, his originals being in very high demand.

Celebration of Flight is an extensive compilation of the aviation art work of this multi-skilled illustrator come artist. Arthur Ward, the book’s author, starts with a detailed background on the artist’s career, infuences and approach to his art work. This is followed by the gallery of images including cut-aways and side profiles, ordered chronologically to tell the story of flight and narrated throughout by the artist. Overall the quality of this large format volume is excellent.

Reviewer’s Pick
Selected as the cover picture of the book, Spirit of St Louis, is a striking image that brings home the vulnerability of a small, single-engined plane against the vastness of the Atlantic ocean.
