The golden era of the magnificent flying boats was all too short. At a time when good quality airfields were few and far between, the flying boats were the obvious global transport solution. With Pan American and Britain’s Imperial Airways leading the way, the 1930s saw new routes open up as travel to the planet’s exotic outposts became a serious reality. The Second World War changed everything, with military requirements driving new airfield construction and rapid aircraft development. In a few short years the flying boats had become largely obsolete.
