The term ‘Ace’ was originally coined by the French in WWI and referred to fighter pilots who had achieved five or more victories. By WW2 the word had for ever become part of the vocabulary of aerial combat and many new Aces were born. Flying Aces is a study of many of these personal stories of skill and courage. In a five page introduction the authors give a brief dialogue charting the rise of the fighter Ace from the early aviation adventurers of WWI to the hardened professional pilots of WW2.

The main body of the book is a gallery of work from leading aviation artists, each illustrating the story of a distinguished Ace or squadron or fighting group such as the American Volunteer Group in China. In all over seventy paintings are included, supported by period photos. The volume concludes with short biographies of the contributing artists which include Robert Taylor, Nicolas Trudgian, Gil Cohen, Roy Grinnell and Stan Stokes. Quite a lot of the pictures span the spine of the book which is not ideal, however overall this is a well presented volume that is good value.
