Frank Wootton profile

Frank Wootton had the rare advantage of being able to take many of his aviation art references from first hand experience in the field as he toured combat war zones with the RAF during WWII.  Having said that many would regard proximity to the enemy and the associated hardships as a rather dubious ‘advantage’.  Frank, though makes light of it as he gives the personal account of life in the RAF that makes up the first part of this book.

The remainder of the book is dedicated to colour plates of Frank Wootton’s work, about 70 in all spanning his painting career and tackling subjects from WWI biplanes to Concorde.

The First Non-stop Transatlantic Flight

The First Non-stop TransAtlantic Flight by Frank Wooton

Overall this is an excellently presented book with well produced colour images and a good selection of Frank Wootton’s pencil sketches.  Foreword is by Air Chief Marshal Sir Neil Wheeler GCB, CBE, DSO, DFC, AFC.

“Frank Wootton has long been regarded as the RAF’s ‘own’ artist.
He is an absolute master of his field.”
AIR CHIEF MARSHAL SIR THOMAS KENNEDY, GCB, AFC, DL, RAF

Reviewers Pick
Given Frank Wootton is so well known for his classical landscapes and skyscapes this may seem a strange selection. Maybe its because I have been lucky enough to be able to study the original at Strike Command HQ (RAF Bentley Priory) but Lightnings of No 56 Squadron gets my vote for its superb composition and meticulously observed detail.
